One of Nigeria’s most promising artistes, Divine Ikubor, widely recognized as Rema, has expressed how he felt when he found out that he had made it to Obama’s annual summer playlist 2019.
Barack Obama, on his Instagram page sometime back, shared a photo containing an annual list of songs that he and his wife, Michelle, had been listening to. The then 19-year old singer’s debut single ‘Iron man’ made him the only Nigerian artiste on the 44-song list covering songs from various genres and time periods.
Having to choose between his BET nomination, his mention on Obama’s playlist and his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, which one really hit him, the singer unhesitatingly chose the Obama feat.
“It touched me really deep because I actually experienced ten years in one year. The speed at which my music travelled was beyond human imagination. It was beyond my team and it was beyond our planning. Seeing my music being appreciated that far, getting to Obama, it’s huge”, he said.
Rema further told YFM’s Dryve of your Lyfe show host, Kojo Manuel in a phone interview on the show that the fact that Obama picked ‘Iron man’, a song that has his deeper vibe and not just one of his regular afrobeat songs like ‘Dumebi’ or ‘Corny’ shows how much he understands and syncs with that kind of music, and that really touched him.
