The Parish Priest of Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra, Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell has said that for family bonds to be strengthened, the emphasis on materialism and possessions in family relationships must be done away with.
According to him, family bonds between married persons as well as between parents and children can only be strengthened if God has a central place in the lives of people.
Speaking in an interview with Akosua Hanson on the Y Leaderboard Series, he bemoaned the alarming rate at which marriages are breaking down and family bonds are getting loose each and every day.
Father Campbell advised, “Prayer is key. The family that prays together will stay together. We are getting too materialistic. It is not what you have. Who we are should matter and not what you have or where you live.it is not about you going on holidays or what car you drive or what land you have. That should not come into it.
On the last day, you won’t carry these things into the box. So the most important thing is your relationship with God and people are putting so much emphasis on materialism. God must have a central place in your life. Every day we need to pray to God”.
One cause of broken homes in Ghana is divorce. According to Onlinedivorce.com, in 2019, there have been almost four thousand divorces, which statistically means the divorce rate in Ghana is around 10% average if not slightly more. That’s considerably higher than the average rate in 1960, and even in 2010.
