Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder of Glitz Africa/Kollage Media, Claudia Lumor, has advised diasporas to look out for the following before settling in Ghana.
According to her, Ghana is great but she always tells friends and those in the diaspora that Ghana is not for everyone.
Speaking to Rev. Erskine on Y 107.9FM’s YLeaderboard Series, she said, “Ask yourself where your heart is because for me, I knew from day one that I wasn’t going to live in the UK for the rest of my life. For some people living abroad, it is what they want to do and that is what their life is about. If that is what it is then don’t force yourself to move back as you can always come for holidays.”
She however noted that if they really want to settle in Ghana, “then they should have a purpose for coming back.”
Using herself as an example she stated that she always knew that if she lived in the UK, she would not fulfill her purpose and that is not what she wanted.
“So, number one is to know where your heart is and secondly, when you decide to come change your mindset,” she emphasized.
Per her observation, Ghanaians preparing to come back to the country always have negative things to say about Ghana and complain about everything that goes on here, but won’t complain about it when it happens to them over there.
“The mindset of we want the same Europe or America in Ghana should be left at the airport as soon as we get to Ghana. Your mind should be ready and also know what you are hoping to achieve, and the kind of impact you are coming with because living in Ghana is not as easy as it looks. So, if you’re not here with a direction and a purpose whether for work, finding a job or what you’re contributing to, it will be difficult for you to live here,” she added.
Claudia went on to advise diasporas to be sure of what they want to do because “some diasporas have the mindset that they’re coming to make Ghana better which is wrong.
They should note that whether they come or not Ghana, will do great but you need to know that you’re also coming in to experience something and make yourself better so you are coming to put in and also take,” she said.
She furthered that once they figure all these things out without constantly complaining about everything “you should be fine.
It’s just the mindset of accepting where we are and just making sure that whatever you’re contributing is making an impact and it’s impacting your life as well,” she stated.
