South Africa’s Sjava has won ahead of Ghana’s Kwesi Arthur for the 2018 BET Viewers’ Choice Best New International Act award.
The award was presented to the South African ahead of the main event night, which is being hosted by Jamie Foxx.
A good showing, Arthur’s nomination received enormous support at home as fans and colleague celebrities led separate campaigns to call for votes.
In what has been an encouraging rise in the last one year, an eventual win would have been a perfect addition to a career story that has also been inspirational.
Famed for his aspirational anthem, “Grind Day”, the act, June 22, attended a star-studded pre-event; the Gift Lounge, in the company of fellow modern African icons Davido and Michael Dapaah (Big Shaq).
Signed to Ground Up, Arthur was nominated alongside Mc Soffia (Brazil), Prince Waly (France), Take A Mic (France), Niniola (Nigeria), Sik-K (South Korea), Nailah Blackman (Trinidad And Tobago), Not3s (UK), Iamddb (UK) and Sjava.
The Microsoft Theatre (Los Angeles, California) is hosting the 18th BETs. DJ Kahled and Kendrick Lamar led this year’s nominations with six and five respectively.
