Nigerian-American ‘Young Icon’, Teemanay has indicated that he ultimately cuts across as an Afrobeats artiste.
In an interview with Y107.9 FM’s Kojo Manuel on the “Dryve of Your Lyve”, Teemanay shared that his musical journey was inspired by the renowned African music great, Fela Kuti.
However, despite being recognized for producing more songs that allies with the ‘Afro-Fusion’ genre, he classifies his style as ‘Afro-Switch’.
Teemanay explained that his style references his exploratory lifestyle, having lived within different cultures across the world.
“I’m an Afrobeat artiste because my music is inspired by the founder of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti so definitely my sound comes as a sub-genre under Afrobeat. So Afro-fusion is nice to say and I usually call mine Afro-switch because of the different places I have lived growing up in Nigeria, lived in South Africa and then now to the States mixed a little bit with the culture here. So my sound has a little bit of Afrobeat in it originally with Caribbean sounds and RnB. So having RnB on top of it makes it kind of fuses the whole Afrobeat beat sound that’s why I kind of call it Afro -Switch which is a sub-genre under Afrobeat,” he shared.
Teemanay since making his music debut in 2014 has released several songs with his latest EP dubbed “Timeless.” He has also played on a variety of stages both domestically and internationally.
His most recent song, “Vibez,” is quickly becoming popular and earning him the moniker “The New Vibe of Afrobeats,” which his admirers gave him in reference to his unusual musical style.
