After Ghana’s abysmal showing at the just ended MTV Base MAMAs in South Africa, talent manager Kiki Banson has revealed the reason why Ghana did not win any awards at this year’s event is because our artists don’t market their brands across the continent.
The former manager of award winning act Becca talking on Happy FM’s SHowbiz Xtra told Dr Cann;
“I don’t see awards as competition. It’s only used to access the output of artist at the end of the year. Most of these awards go to the Nigerians because they have the numbers. It’s not because we are not talented, it’s because we are few. Nigerians dominate the nominations and so in a category you will have two Nigerians and that means Nigeria has two chances of winning while Ghana might have one or none.”
The EKB Records boss talking about how BET winner Sarkodie approached his marketing said a lot of Ghanaian acts had good music but focused on national than continental.
“Apart from Sarkodie I dont see any other Ghanaian artist who is pushing his brand across the continent. I have a lot of respect for the others. A lot of the artists have good material but the material will not sell itself. You will have to sell the material.
Touching on Shatta Wale’s brand Kiki detailed the problem with Shatta Wale’s brand disclosed;
“I have a lot of respect for Shatta Wale. I see him doing well in Ghana but he has the capabilities to do what Sarkodie is doing and beyond. He is doing well but it’s left with the marketing. But the problem in my opinion is marketing outside Ghana.”
Talking about the solutions to the problem Kiki Banson revealed all Ghanaian acts needed was a little funding.
“We have to have people in these other African countries looking after our interest. And it doesn’t come free so it boils down to having the understanding, the team, and little money to push. The most important thing is understanding what to do.”
