Seasoned Sports Journalist, Amy Fynn-Thompson, has discredited the notion that women in sports suffer body alterations which eventually robs them of meeting suitors.
She states that she has observed with concern how many people believe that venturing into sports as a woman automatically gives one a masculine physique and subsequently makes one less attractive.
Speaking to Y97.9FM’s Chelsy Sey on the ‘Ryse N Shyne’ show, she encouraged young women not to be discouraged by these notions when they have decided to join the sporting arena.
“We have people who are mothers and still play. Previously our parents had a mentality that if you do sports, you will look masculine. But we have people who don’t do sports and yet look masculine. So it is never true that if you play football, you will look masculine and you won’t get a husband. And we are very sweet. Women footballers are very sweet. We are very romantic and we are good cooks.
It is about yourself and what you want to achieve”, she stated.
She further advised that for one to excel in her career despite opposition from well-meaning people and family, one has to pursue her career in a way that others will readily accept what they choose.
Exemplifying her point, she stated: “My mother didn’t like me doing radio but I decided that is what I want because in the near future when she is not there, what I want will take me to where I want to be. And funny enough, anytime I was on air, she would listen to me. I did everything possible to achieve what I wanted to do”.
On 8th March, 2021, the world will be marking the International Women’s Day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
