Ghanaian actress, Hailey Sumney has sent a strong message to men on how they can support women with the ultimate aim of gender equality.
According to her, as we celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), their support need not be gargantuan. On her part, actions as little as supporting women on social media can go a long way to make an impact.
She shared these comments during an interview with Rev. Erskine on the special IWD edition of the Myd Morning Radio Show.
“They [men] can also have a voice for women. They can support the women. For example, the simple things are supporting women on social media at events and stuff like that and making them more inclusive. I always make examples of even let’s say industry events. It is mostly men who are involved and when you ask they go like ‘they [the women] won’t come’. But you haven’t extended the invite. Be more inclusive, educate yourselves and support”.
Based on her comment, however, Rev. Erskine sought to know if women needed an ‘invite’ from men in order to grab opportunities.
Hailey was however quick to note that “It is not about going out there to grab opportunities. Sometimes we are stopped at the door so you [men] need to open that door so we can just walk in”.
Commenting on what IWD means to her, Hailey summed that it is about celebrating women worldwide and women fighting for equality”.
On the 8th of March every year the world celebrate the tremendous efforts by women and girls in shaping a more equal future.
