Ghana’s number one urban station, YFM, for the past few months has been announcing its new campaign dubbed ‘Y Refresh’; an initiative to build an exciting and more successful culture that will keep listeners and community entertained and engaged. This initiative is backed by a line-up of great talents and refreshing programmes to entertain listeners.
Programmes Manager for YFM, Eddy Blay, speaking on the birth of this campaign shared that he is very appreciative of the presence of COVID-19. According to him, while the pandemic has brought about negative things, it has also presented a positive change such as the Y Refresh.
Speaking to Foster Romanus on the Late Nite Celebrity Show, Eddy Blay noted, “It is just COVID-19. You blame it and you thank it. I thank COVID-19. Sometimes you look at it and think, it is what it is. The whole dynamics have changed”.
Eddy Blay made reference to an earlier interview with the Charterhouse CEO on the Y Leaderboard series who noted that COVID-19 was an opportunity for creatives to reinvent themselves.
“Madam Theresa Ayoade from Charterhouse was on the Y Leaderboard series and she broke it down for us and said you know what, times are hard for the creatives. It is not like it used to be. All the Loud in GH and all the Area Codes and all the Twist night clubs and all the Bloombars are on hold. So what do you do? You’ve got to survive and you’ve got to lift up your game and see it as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. That is what happened. It is just looking at it as an opportunity to reinvent, re-energize, revitalize, relaunch and refresh”.
DJ for YFM’s ‘Shouts On Y’, Quarps Hansen expressed his excitement for the Y Refresh campaign embarked on by YFM. He revealed that the campaign had afforded him the opportunity to have a role as the head of music; a role he so loves dearly.
Recounting his YFM experience, he disclosed that he joined YFM’s sports team and only learnt to DJ on the job.
“I joined YFM in 2011 and started off with sports. Then I moved to become the producer for Ryse N Shyne. After a while, I started playing the Afropolitan mix. I did the Y Lounge for some time and moved to shouts on Y. I learnt Deejaying on the job. I did not come to Y FM as a DJ. As part of producing sports, you had to play songs so I Iearnt it on the job. And I think I was also influenced by my father. At first, I didn’t think about it but my father used to have CDs of songs. I remember when I was young, anytime I came back from school, he would play songs from Craig David. I wasn’t much into music then. I was just about sports. I think I realize now that it has created a path for me”, he said.
Eddy Blay doubles as the Programmes Manager of Y107.9 and presenter of YFM’s Weekend Mash-Up programme that airs from 5pm to 8pm every Saturday. Quarps Hansen is the DJ for YFM’s ‘Shouts On Y’ that airs from Monday to Friday, from 12pm to 3pm.
