YFM, Ghana’s number one urban youth entertainment channel, to mark its 12years anniversary, has once again brought to a successful end the second edition of its highly anticipated Y-Rated awards. This initiative seeks to acknowledge Ghanaian artistes who have greatly contributed to Ghana’s music industry with their hit songs and jams.
The Y-Rated awards, which was organized as part of activities to mark 12 years of YFM’s undisputed provision of quality content and entertainment for the Ghanaian populace, was this time in collaboration with 4Syte TV, hence was held at the prestigious 4Syte mansion. As last year’s edition had eleven categories to mark its 11th anniversary, this year‘s came with an additional one, making twelve very tough categories.
The night started off with the “Pre-Show with the Soulman” who kept the place charged up with random rap freestyles, amidst super dope performances from budding artistes like Sentini, Khalifina, Skillz 8Figure, Jay Nice, among others.
Best Rated Gospel Artiste was the first category on the list, but it could not have been that easy to announce without a quick performance from Gyakie to calm nerves with her soothing voice on some of her dope songs like ‘Never like this’, ‘Sor mi mu’, ‘Control’ and ‘Forever’.
Kofi Karikari won the Gospel song of the year award with his song “Who say God no dey?”, followed by Stonebwoy, who not so shockingly won the Best Rated Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the year. Best Rated Highlife Song went to Mafe Wo by Biqo and the Best Rated Afropop Song, of course was Inna Song by Darko Vibes.
Taking a quick detour, Darko Vibes came through with a performance on a peace song in view of the coming elections, as well as a few of his many hit songs. The super talented Boi Jake also had lots of ladies melting in his smooth, crooner voice as he did some songs like ‘6 Miludo’, ‘Ask me’ and ‘Eyes on you’ from his New Feelings album.
Dorothy of YFM’s Weekend Rush accompanied by Eli from Whoopro then came up to announce the winners for the categories Best Rated Group of the year, Best Rated Rap Song and the Best Rated Reggae-Dancehall song. These categories were won by R2Bees, Brown Paper Bag by Sarkodie featuring Manifest, and Stonebwoy with his ‘Everlasting’ song respectively.
After another mind-blowing act from the Empawa superstar J. Derobie, King Promise bagged the award for this year’s newly introduced category, the Best Rated Video of the year with his song ‘Sisa’. Next Rated Artiste (new artiste of the year) went to the Atta Adwoa hitmaker Bosom P-Yung, and YFM’s very own Winston Micheals, presenter of Shouts on Y and eTV Ghana’s Hot 20 Countdown went home with the award for the Best Collaboration of the year for his song ‘Abrantie the Gentleman’ featuring Kayso and Bryan the Mensah.
Of course, the show could not go on as perfectly without another short intermission to take in some good music from Adina with her sultry voice. She came through with ‘One man’, ‘Sika’, ‘My baby’, ‘Take care of you’ and her newest single ‘Why’. The venue was now lit up enough to announce the winners, or as it turned out to be, the winner for the Best Rated Tape and Best Rated Song of the year, Stonebwoy’ with Anloga Junction and his international chart-topping song Nominate which featured the lovely Keri Hilson.
To climax the night, the whole YFM team present, from Programmes Manager Eddy Blay to presenters and DJs, all came together on stage for the cake cutting and champagne popping in celebration of their twelve years of being Ghana’s biggest urban entertainment radio station.
Eddy Blay, as Programmes Manager of YFM, gave a short vote of thanks to end the night and this is what he had to say;
“Thank you all for watching and joining us for this year’s Y-Rated awards. Next year, we’ll make it even bigger and hopefully, this pandemic will die down so that we can invite everybody to come in and party with us on our 13th anniversary. A big thanks to 4Syte TV as well for holding this up with us tonight”.
He also urged listeners to stay tuned in to YFM as there will be even more exciting and quality entertainment content to keep raising the yet unbeatable standard of the station and to keep the young and young at heart yearning for more.
