Starting this week, WhatsApp video and audio calls just got easier with the power of Google Assistant.
While Google Assistant has historically enabled texting across Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Viber, and a variety of other apps, video and voice calling options were limited… until now! Through Google Assistant’s integration with WhatsApp, making a video or voice call on the latter is as easy as: “Hey Google, WhatsApp video Bill,” or “Hey Google, WhatsApp call John.”
Don’t get confused though. Google Assistant has always been able to start voice calls using your phone network. Video calls used to only work through Google Hangouts or the Duo app, but now thanks to this new WhatsApp integration you get more choice.
Google’s announcement of the new feature has been sparse, but this is probably only available on smartphones for the time being. So don’t bother trying to give it a go via your Google Nest Hub. Not yet, anyway…
If the feature isn’t working right away, don’t fret! It is a new service so Google is probably rolling out slowly. What about iOS? Well, iOS users have had the Siri / WhatsApp feature since 2016.
