Farmer and Conservation Agriculture Expert, David Opoku-Ababio has asked the youths to confidently venture into agriculture.
According to him, investing in agriculture can be likened to staking a bet in sports.
In an interview with YFM’s Princess AJ on the ‘Myd Morning Show’, he explained: “You can make profit from agriculture but it is difficult. It is high risk, high reward just like betting. You can win big or lose big”.
David suggested, however, that to make agriculture easy, the youth must make use of technology.
“There is a new wave of system of farming with tech. People are employing the use of drones to do spraying, to detect plant stress, and pest infestation. So whatever field you are in as a youth, I will encourage you that you can use your expertise in the area of Agric”, he added.
The farmer encouraged that to reduce the risk involved in farming, youths who venture into agriculture must “diversify their investments”.
“So, you can think long term crops like oil palm, coconut, and rubber and these take a long time to grow rather than short term plants like vegetables”, he stated.
The International Youth Day is marked on the 12th of August every year to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.
This year’s theme is dubbed “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”.
