The Western Region’s number one urban radio Y Takoradi is as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations, embarking on a social responsibility project within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
To mark the 10th birthday celebrations Y 97.9 FM will be painting and repainting Zebra crossings at 10 different locations within the Sekondi-Takoradi catchment area starting from August 22.
A move Agyekum Gyimah Programmes Manager of Y-Takoradi says will help keep the pedestrians in the metropolis safe.
‘’ Zebra crossings are particularly beneficial because pedestrians may find it difficult to judge the speed of traffic when crossing on their own without crossing facilities. We hope the new zebra crossings have a very positive impact on pedestrian’s feelings about crossing the road in these 10 communities. We wish for pedestrians to be more confident, and feel safer when crossing the road’’ the Programmes Manager stated.
He also encouraged drivers to stop at the Zebra Crossing for pedestrians to cross the roads safely.
‘’Some drivers do not always stop as expected. So we are calling on them to always stop at Zebra crossings to allow people to cross the road safely. However, I would like to encourage pedestrians to wait for cars to stop before they walk into the road’’ he advised.
The 10 communities earmarked for the painting are St Anthony of Padua R/C School – Kwesimintsim, Bethel Methodist School & Top Royal School – Sawmill, Tanokrom School Junction, Ketan Junction, Airforce School near GSTS, Sekondi Library, TTU Gate, Takoradi Jubilee, Effiakuma No. 9, Sekondi Cluster of schools.
The Zebra crossing project is sponsored by Pizza World, Snap Finger and Waste 360.
