Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Association of Bankers, Mr. John Awuah, has advised that parents should allow their children work to earn some things for themselves.
Speaking with Rev. Erskine on Y107.9FM’s Y-Leaderboard Series, he explained that parents of today, especially those who come from deprived homes, run at risk for saying that they will not allow their children to go through the pain that they went through while growing up.
“By so doing, we do not create and mould them into the best possible way for the future. You’ll find that if we’re not careful, it will be cyclical”, he said.
Mr. Awuah noted that children who are suffering now are the children who will lead tomorrow so if everyone fights to give their children everything on a silver platter and the cycle continues, the child will be found wanting in the absence of the parent because they do not have the ability to be creative and look for things for themselves.
“I’ll really encourage parents to let children work for things. If it is about making sure you dress your bed before you can have something, then make sure the child does it, then they can get it.
We need to let our children work for things. Even if it is a small gift you want to give your child, maybe you can afford a hundred fold but let the child do something and merit that gift you’re giving him”, Mr. John Awuah further added.
According to the Deputy CEO, it is extremely important for people to find things for themselves because there is always a danger when one remains on the receiving end.
