The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dentsu Ghana, Andrew Ackah has advised both old and young professionals to equally give the same level of attention to the development of their character as they do their skills.
He believes one can truly be successful by possessing the requisite skill and also having the right character to succeed.
“To be successful, you need to have the skill and this must be complemented with your character. The principle is to know what you’re doing and have the character to do the job right. Having the skill and character makes you more successful. Some people build the skill and lack the character and that is a problem”, he stated.
Speaking to Akosua Hanson on the Y LeaderBoard Series, Andrew noted that to build one’s character, the individual needs to appreciate him or herself and know the strengths and weaknesses they possess. “You need to know how to use that to achieve your goals and influence people positively. Build an aura of attractiveness and you will stand out.
He also advised corporate executives to be brutally knowledgeable by reading a lot of self-help books and “also learning the politics of work”.
On his authority, young professionals should not be bothered when they do not receive the remuneration they deserve but rather focus on paying their dues and building their capacity. “You need to sacrifice and pay your dues. You may know that you deserve to be paid around Gh₵5,000 per month but you take Gh₵2,500 for the work. Put your all into it, learn and grow. Be the master of your craft and don’t chase the remuneration. In due course, the remuneration will be built up exponentially”.
He told the youth to also seek out mentors who will criticize them whenever they begin to sway from their path. “Everyone who wants to succeed needs a mentor who will criticize and let you know when you’re not doing well”.
