Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend Travis Scott has opened his wallet for students trying to get ahead in life. The rapper has donated $1 million to black college students who earned over a 3.5 GPA.
The gift was part of his Project Heal initiative that launched in March and is overseen by his sister Jordan Webster. It seems to be an effort to repair his image after 10 people died at his Astroworld concert in Houston, Texas in November.
‘Excellence abounds in every black household, but too often opportunity does not – and black students are left behind or counted out,’ said Scott this week.
‘So that’s what my family and I set out to change.
‘We congratulate all 100 scholarship recipients this year. I know we will see great things from them – and we are already looking forward to increasing our work next year.’
Scott’s Project Heal gave out scholarships to 100 students at HBCUs before they graduate this year.
HBCUs are black colleges and universities in the United States. They were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community.
The site added that the students will each get a $10,000 scholarship from Scott as long as they completed their last semester with at least a 3.5 GPA.
The site shared the names of some of the recipients.
Florida A&M University pharmacy major Nisha Encarnacion, Fisk University computer science major Chisom Okwor, and North Carolina Central University broadcast journalism major Jordan Massey.
Travis sister Jordan has been overseeing the gifts. She is a college graduate as well after attending Howard University.
Project Heal was announced in March 2022 and included $5 million in funding. It wanted to ‘take much needed action towards supporting real solutions that make all events the safest spaces they can possibly be,’ among other youth-related matters.
Scott has slowly been trying to come back after the horrific Astroworld tragedy that saw 10 people die in November after a mob crush.
His most recent performance was at the Billboard Music Awards over the weekend. And on May 8 he performed in Miami.
The rapper has two children with reality TV star Kylie Jenner. The children are daughter Stormi Webster and a son whose name used to be Wolf; his new name has not yet been announced.
